Troop 46 Scouts Hold Their 2008 Pinewood
Derby
By Chris Barrett, Publisher/Managing Editor |
Since
the Pinewood Derby’s creation in 1952, over 100 million seven-inch
blocks of pinewood have been sold by the Boy Scouts of America. Each
spring thousands of Scouts across the country continue a longtime
tradition by turning a block of pinewood, four nails and four plastic
wheels into a 5-ounce, gravity-powered racecar.
At the Pinewood Derby the Scouts compete for fastest car, but that’s not
all. Troop 46 also presents design category awards for cars that most
impress a handful of judges. These cars best capture the design category
themes: Scouting, Nautical Design, Patriotic Spirit, Animal Design and
Food Design.
This year the Scouts of Troop 46 gathered at the Westchase Elementary
Multipurpose Room and raced cars shaped like sharks, Hershey bars, army
tanks, Gasparilla floats, Godiva chocolates, French fries and, yes, race
cars.
The spirited Scouts had a blast.
WOW congratulates this year’s winners of Troop 46’s Pinewood
Derby and thanks all the great parents who sent in photos of the event!
