WOW in the World
Beauty and Irony Mark WOW’s Travels
While a few months old, the April WOW produced two great photos – one notable for its sheer beauty and the other for its wry irony.
After its publication, Harbor Links/The Estates resident Carrie Hughes and her family carried the April WOW to Medellin, Columbia in South American to visit Carrie's father, who lives there. Kayla and Skyler Hughes carried it to the top of a stone monolith known as El Peñón de Guatapé, located in Guatape, Columbia, about 40 miles from Medellin. Explained Carrie, “This is a large granite rock and for a few dollars you can climb the 679 steps to the top. You can see the Finger Lakes behind them. It’s a stunningly beautiful area.”
The Vila family of The Greens also took the April WOW on a trip to London and Paris in early June and submitted one of the editor’s favorite WOW in the World photos. Jacob Vila is holding the April WOW inside one of the glass capsules of the London Eye, the huge Ferris wheel that served as inspiration for the April WOW’s traditional April Fool cover gag. Visible in the photo with Jacob, who is hanging high above London instead of West Park Village, are Parliament and Big Ben.
The London Eye, formerly called the Millennial Wheel, was constructed in 1998-1999 to commemorate the arrival of the new millennium. It stands 443 feet high on the south bank of the River Thames. Each one of its 32 egg-shaped, air-conditioned capsules can hold up to 25 people. One revolution of the tourist attraction generally takes 30 minutes.
WOW thanks the Hughes and Vilas for the fun and beautiful photos – and for sharing their trips with us.
