Pet Owners and Playing in the Street

Playing in the Street, Part II

I’m writing to address the March letter to the editor titled “Playing in the Street.” With all due respect to those who believe it’s OK for Westchase children to play in the streets, I couldn't disagree more. Yes, we want the kids to be outside playing and not staring at the TV all day and this is why Westchase is so great. We have wonderful parks, tennis courts, and swimming pools for the children to enjoy. Yes, it may be necessary for you to take them to the park and not be a “bump on a log.”

I don't really think anyone cares about getting home 10 seconds earlier, but they do care about not ruining lives due to a devastating accident.

Your cavalier attitude about children playing in the streets is scary. Roadways are built for automobiles!

Please Scoop the Poop

It’s another beautiful day in Westchase and my kids are playing football in the yard with the neighborhood kids. All of a sudden the garage door slams, and one of my boys screams, “Mom, I fell in dog poop again!”

Oh, how I hate those words!

We live on a corner lot. We’re lucky that we have a bigger lawn because it gives our kids more room to play. We’re unlucky to have two sides of our home that have sidewalks used by people who walk their dogs.

We don’t have a dog. It’s not that we don’t like them. It’s that I don’t want to have the responsibility of having to care, walk and clean-up after them (I have three boys and a husband; thank you, that’s enough).

Between shopping and getting the paper everyday, we all have plenty of plastic bags. Yet why do some dog owners feel they don’t need to clean up after their dogs? I understand that you may not want to pick up the poop around your own home, but what is stopping you from picking up what your dog deposits around mine? I’m not taking my garbage and disposing it in your yard.

Please don’t get me wrong; this is not everyone. I have wonderful dog-owning neighbors who pick up after their pets every time. To all of them: thank you!

Yet I have put up signs in my yard asking dog walkers to please clean up after their animals. My kids are still falling in piles of the stuff, and I’m still stepping in it while I mow. So fellow Westchasers, I ask you – no, I’m begging you: please scoop the poop!
