Westchase Shout Outs, December 2014

Lucas and Joseph Trim of Bennington competed against each other for the first time in their college careers at the Lehigh Invitational Golf Tournament. Joseph, a freshman, along with his Fordham University team, bested Lucas, a sophomore, and his Villanova University team for fourth place out of 13 teams by four strokes.

Kudos to the Wizards of Westchase Elementary! Goodwill’s Bookworks recently placed a donation bin at the school. The students, teachers and staff did a wonderful job filling the bin with over 1,100 books! The books went directly to children in Head Start West Central Florida. Thank you, Wizards!

Congratulations to Dylan Swick of The Greens for earning his First Degree Black Belt on Saturday, Oct. 4. Your parents and family are so proud of the nearly five years of dedication and effort you have put into achieving this goal! The Swick family also appreciates Mr. Petrov and the other black belt instructors at Impact Martial Arts for their leadership and encouragement.

Congratulations to Jordan Lowrey of Harbor Links for earning her Girl Scout Gold Award! For her project, Jordan established and ran an art club at the Northwest YMCA. She designed the curriculum, donated the supplies and worked with the kids for over 100 hours. The Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting and was the culmination of Jordan's 13 years as a Girl Scout in Troop 772.

Bridges residents Payton and Parker Heckman, along with their neighbor, Avery DeAngelo, recently hosted a lemonade stand, where 100 percent of the profits were donated to the Hope Children’s Home, located here in Tampa. The kids had a blast interacting with their neighbors, and were blown away by the generosity and kindness of everyone who stopped. In the end, the kids raised $155, which was later presented to the staff at Hope Children’s Home.

Westchase Shout Outs, January 2014

Many thanks to Brandon and Dan O’Brien, Ralph Caputo, their friend, Santa Claus, and all the other paraders for bringing so many smiles to the community during Dec. 14’s Pre-Flight Parade. You guys were awesome!

In November Girl Scout Daisy Troops 764 and 765 joined creative forces to make get well cards for veterans at James A. Haley Hospital. Parents, friends, siblings (including an older Scout from 477) made this event a huge success in bringing smiles to recovering vets.

During November’s Great American Teach-In, over 80 Westchase Elementary fifth graders got a special visit from the Department of Homeland Security. Special agents and members of the Special Response Team from Homeland Security Investigations arrived in a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected all-terrain vehicle. The students checked out the inside of the MRAP and tried on some of the SRT equipment used during their law enforcement operations. Many thanks to the Department of Homeland Security for a very special visit!

A shout out to Scott Dudley! Thrilled to have seven children's bicycles recently donated to Westchase Elementary School, guidance counselor Valarie Romero only had one minor problem: how to get them into the students’ hands? Ms. Romero turned to the Dads’ Club, who reached out to its parents. Scott immediately took time out of his busy schedule to pick-up the bikes at a local merchant and bring them to Westchase Elementary. Thanks to Scott for stepping up on behalf of the Dads' Club and doing a good deed for the school!

A shout out to Jorge Gonzalez, who saved the day for the Westchase Elementary Dads Club this past month. He came through with a trailer in a clinch to haul a few barbecue grills over to the school’s kickball tournament. Without his help, everyone would have missed out on the delicious grilled hot dogs (and fundraising) the Dads Club cooked up during the benefit event. Thanks, Jorge!

Robinson IB parents who live in Westchase want to thank John Franklin, the Hillsborough County School District’s Director of Transportation. When parents recently raised issues concerning bus safety, overcrowding and difficult travel conditions (no air conditioning during the beastly hot 30-minute afternoon ride from South Tampa), Mr. Franklin took time to meet with them and hear their concerns. Within two weeks, nearly all the issues they raised had been addressed. Thanks, Mr. Franklin!

For the second year in a row, Vanessa Montenegro, a member of the Westchase Artists Society, has had two pieces of her artwork selected for the Tampa Bay Lightning Celebration of the Arts. “Poke Check” and “2004 Stanley Cup Finals” were awarded Honorable Mentions and will be on display at the Tampa Bay Times Forum for the 2013-14 Tampa Bay Lightning regular season. The works can be found on the fifth floor outside Suites 66 and 67. Linita Calvacca, one of Montenegro’s students and fellow member of the Westchase Artists Society, also had one of her pieces selected for the show for the second year in a row. Congratulations, Vanessa and Linita!

Keswick Forest residents lost their neighborhood pet, Rooftop, better known as “Roofie” or “The Mayor of Keswick Forest.” Rooftop, a yellow lab, walked the streets of Keswick every day and night whether it was sunny or raining. He greeted everyone willing and joined in all neighborhood parties and driveways parties. All Keswickians thank Ed Kupsche and Ivan Vazquez for letting us share in loving the coolest dude dog ever. We will miss you, Rooftop.

Congratulations to Glenn Elliott Stephens, who released a CD on the Driftwood Tide Music Label as a benefit for P.A.W.S. for Autism (People and Animals Working Side-by-Side) in May of 2013.  Glenn’s CD is entitled, "Then Sings My Soul...Songs of Inspiration." Glenn partnered with Anna Laura Bryan, Miss Alabama, and her platform, which won the Quality of Life award during the 2013 Miss America Pageant. CDs are available at http://www.glennelliottstephens.com and you can follow Glenn at http://www.reverbnation.com/glennelliottstephens

Residents of Ayrshire Drive recently celebrated the 80th birthday of long-time Shires resident Chet Stephens. Traveling quite a distance to join the fun were Robert Abel and his wife Emily of South Florida, his cousin Doreen from Georgia and his eldest son, Lee, from  Birmingham, Alabama. Chet's birthday cake was made by his niece, Victoria Elliott and sent from her restaurant, Clary's Corner in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. All the neighborhood kids enjoyed spending time with their buddy, "Mr. Chet," and swimming in his pool while the adults visited.

Congratulations to Matt Cooper of the Eagles, son of Westchasers Bill and Marie Cooper. Matt recently attended Mensa’s National Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, where he gave a presentation entitled, Global Warming is Not My Fault! Matt’s presentation argues global warming is stoppable only if the world population takes serious, and sometimes inconvenient steps to prevent the most disastrous consequences. Matt will make the presentation again on Aug. 3, 2013 at the Countryside Library in Clearwater. The public is invited and admission is free.

Congratulations to the Keystone Little League 7-8 year-old fast-pitch softball All-Star Team for winning the Tampa Bay Friendship Tournament hosted by Citrus Park LL in early June.  The sole Westchaser on the team was Erin Hamilton of Brentford. Keystone LL is a great organization and it would be wonderful to have more of Westchase's girl athletes join up for the fall season.

Bridges residents and Westchase Elementary students, Payton Heckman and Avery DeAngelo, hugged goodbye to their beloved crossing guard, Miss Rosa, during the last week of school. Miss Rosa retired this year and will be very missed by many Westchase residents.

Congrats Ella Cimino of The Shires. Ella scored a perfect five in reading and five in math on the 2013 FCAT.  Ella just completed third grade at Westchase Elementary.

Well done, Westchase Elementary First Grade Math Bowl Team. At the Math Bowl competition in Plant City on May 29 the team did an awesome job and took home a third place finish. Coached by Mrs. Washington, the team included Julia Barrett, Jackson Meyer, Andrew Campbell, Faith Hidenfelter and Jonah Roth.  We're so proud of all of our Math Wizards!

Congratulations to Jack Georgiades  of The Greens for earning his black belt at Impact Martial Arts on June 1. After two and a half years of commitment and hard work you have reached your goal. Your mom and dad are so proud of you! Keep your eye on the prize and always go above and beyond! Thanks, Mr. Petrov, for being such a positive role-model and inspiration for Jack!

The Tropical Trotters, Florida Morgan Horse Association youth club would like to thank the Wood Team, Coldwell Banker for their generous contribution of items. The team also thanks Camden Westchase Park, Anna Forlini, Manager and Bill Goede of Bank of America for their donations.

Congratulations and thanks to Westchase Art Teacher Laurie Anderson and Music Teachers Vanessa Lewis and John King for an outstanding Elementary Fine Art Festival at the Straz on May 15. On May 14 Hillsborough County School Board recently recognized the Westchase Elementary Fourth and Fifth Grade Math Bowl teams. In the Area 2 competition, both teams took first place. The Fifth Grade Math Bowl team consisted of Mikal Willeke, Matthew Thomas, Kayla Huynh, Lexie Gyelinck and (not pictured) Evan Yount. It was led by Westchase Elementary Teacher Lisa Raab. The Fourth Grade Math Bowl Team consisted of Sabrina Takagishi, Jacob Mahusay, Lila Patterson and (not pictured) Sarah Frank and Aidan McNabb. It was led by Westchase Elementary Teacher Nancy Ragsdale.

Thanks, Dr. and Mrs. Sosa! On April 22, Dr. Michael Sosa of Westchase Chiropractic spent the evening teaching the Cub Scouts of Den 4, Pack 46 all about healthy living. Our boys learned the importance of keeping their bodies healthy and enjoyed a delicious sugar-free snack made by Mrs. Sosa.

Well done and thanks to the Westchase Dads’ Club! The club recently worked with Westchase Elementary Principal Scott Weaver to build the school a robotics table. A special thank-you to Joaquin Arrillaga for spearheading the effort − both garnering the resources and participating in its construction. It looks great!

The Togobago District Pinewood Derby was held at Camp Brorein on May 4. Bear Scout Ethan Rosenblatt won second place in the Best of Show category and third place in Scouting category. He had won first place in Scouting category at the pack level. His car resembled a camp site including a campfire and a camper sleeping inside the tent. Ethan is a 3rd grader at Westchase Elementary and is in Den 13 Pack 46. Way to go, Ethan!

Bravo for returning home with all of your belongings! We are very proud of the world traveler you are.  -Love, Mom and Dad

Kudos to Catch Twenty-Three proprietor Rob Wickner. Setting a goal of raising $7,500 for Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Rob raised over $6,700 by press time – even auctioning off the right to shave his head to get there! He’s still looking for donations, so stop by!

Congratulations to the Alonso Boys and Girls Basketball Teams for a very successful 2012-2013 season. The girls team showed a remarkable improvement from 2011-12, as they improved their record from 4-22 to 18-9, finishing third in the district during the regular season. The boys set an amazing scoring pace throughout the season. They advanced to the district championship game, where they gave Wharton High all they could handle. Thank you, Coach Price and Coach Lewis!

Congratulations to Megan Masters of The Greens and Ashley Riddell of Harbor Links/The Estates for winning the U12 Girls Gasparilla Cup Championship. The Vipers went undefeated throughout the entire tournament and regular season. They also went un-scored upon too! What a great accomplishment for an amazing group of girls!

Well done, Westchase Elementary Fourth Grade Math Bowl Team! Team members Jacob Mahusay, Sarah Frank, Lila Patterson, Sabrina Takagishi and Aidan McNabb practiced diligently with their AGP teacher and coach, Mrs. Nancy Ragsdale, and represented their school in the Fourth Grade Math Bowl District Competition, where they won first place for Area 2.

Congratulations to Greens resident Kristen Keefer, a Steinbrenner High School senior, who was chosen to be in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as a member of the Macy’s Great American Marching Band. Kristen was picked to be one of 50 flag and dance members of the 235 member marching band consisting of high school students from around the country. Spending a week in NYC practicing and sightseeing made the entire experience rewarding and unforgettable!

Thank you, Woodbay Group! Spearheaded by Sal and Marge Demauro, this group hosted a New Year’s Eve party with over 40 households’ friends and kids present. It included a top notch magic show for the children, including levitation acts. It went on that night roasting a 110 pound pig, served with Cuban rice and beans and included entertainment for the adults to ring in a Westchase Community 2013.

Our big thanks to Brian and Michelle Loudermilk for inviting all of us Keswick Forest neighbors to your lovely home for a New Year’s Eve celebration! You guys really know how to throw a party!

All the kids and families in Westchase thank the WCF and, in particular organizers Ralph Caputo and Dan and Brandon O’Brien for the wonderful Santa parade on Dec. 8. They also thank the Tampa Yankees mascot – and all the other great mascots and parade float sponsors – who helped ensure such a wonderful parade! We can’t wait for next year!

Congratulations to two Westchase eighth graders at Williams Middle Magnet International Baccalaureate School who are serving in leadership positions at their school: Lauren Green, daughter of Peter and Yvette Green of The Fords, was elected eighth grade student government president and Kyle Johnson, son of Dan and Angela Johnson of The Shires, was chosen to be president of the National Junior Honor Society and eighth grade president of the Future Business Leaders of America. -Yvette Green and Angela Johnson

Two fourth graders from Westchase Elementary advanced to the finals of the County Science Olympics. Ethan Fabian and Michael Cui created a launch pad from scratch in approximately five minutes from a bag of random parts that were given to all fourth grade science classes in Hillsborough County. Included were blocks, a rubber band, a paint stirrer, a plastic drinking cup and a marshmallow. Upon reaching the finals they exceeded all of their previous launches and propelled their marshmallow over 16 feet to place second overall in the county. Congratulations Ethan and Michael!

WOW’s staff and board members thank Ernie Sylvester of The Greens for his long-time service to the magazine. Ernie began volunteering during WOW’s old Distribution Day bagging of the magazines back in 2001. In recent years he has been a valued and respected member of the WOW, Inc. Board. Ernie’s sense of humor, good sense and gentle nature will be missed by everyone involved with WOW. Thanks, Ernie, for all your wonderful help!

On Christmas morning Gwyneth and Chloe Liebowitz, Caroline Shasek, Courtney Darktash and Makenna Kirsch appeared on ABC’s nationally televised Disney Christmas Parade down Main Street. They appeared along with their teammates from Dawson Dance Academy, under the direction of Jennifer Dawson.

Westchase Shout Outs, Jan. 2013

Halloween is always one of our favorite times of year, and my wife Judy Heinemann takes extra effort to decorate the house for our granddaughter and the neighborhood kids.  She always goes all out, but this year was exceptional.  We quit counting how many parents and children complimented her décor. Twice Judy opened the door to applause from the costumed denizens. It was touching to receive those compliments, especially from the children, small and teens alike.  It also gave us pause to think that the residents here are a special group – and that there are some great parents raising their kids around here. Thanks, Radcliffe, and all who came by on Halloween! -Keith Heinemann

The recent election had a record turnout, and our UTB Library poll workers did their normal super effort for the voters in western Westchase. My sincere thanks go to Glencliff’s Kathy McGlone, Tom Edwards, Ken Blair and JoAnn Gratt, Woodbay’s Charlie Kling, Kathryn DelGuidice (recently of Berkeley Square), Harbor Links’ Darlene Slattery, Radcliffe’s Karen Diaz, and Margaret Deblotte-Torres (Ybor City) for their contributions. I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize Ken Blair and JoAnn Gratt for their careful handling and accounting for all the ballots and voter registers, and Kathy McGlone for all the time she spent assisting voters with minor registration issues, not to mention redirecting numerous lost souls who showed up at the wrong precinct. -Keith Heinemann

I’m extremely proud of my 88-year-old dad Stanley Sherbiak, a new Westchase resident, for participating and finishing the The Great West Chase 5K Run (walk in his case) in 51 minutes. You are an inspiration, Dad! -Stephanie Sherbiak-Troia

Congratulations to the Davidsen Boys Basketball Team on another undefeated regular season!  Great job, Dragons and Coach Pelfrey!

Huge thanks to Bill and Valerie Grodman of All State, located in Westchase Town Center. They have joined on as business partners at both Alonso and Davidsen; for every policy they quote they give $5 toward the school PTSA of your choice.

Big thanks to Dawn Gingrich for training with Grace Wilcox in preparation of the Great West Chase 5K.  Way to go to all the girls in Troop 545 who participated!  Thank you to Dawn G. for being our Girl Scout Leader Superhero!  -Pam Wilcox

Alonso High School’s varsity cheerleaders supported Breast Cancer Awareness at the Oct. 12 football game against Plant City. The squad wore pink ribbons, bloomers, and pom poms for the entire month of October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Thanks to Brandon Hawkins, an Alonso High School Senior! Brandon recently took me to the aquarium because I’ve been dying to go. He told me he got us first row seats to the shark show. Half way through the show, a diver pulled out a piece of paper that read: "Heather, will you go to homecoming with me?" Brandon got on stage in front of everyone and asked me to homecoming on the microphone. I said, “Yes!” It’s by far the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me! -Heather Barber

Congratulations to Bennington’s Joseph Trim! Using a 3-wood, Joseph hit a hole-in-one on the par 3, Number 3 green at Emerald Greens during recent district playoffs. The feat put him in first place and allowed his Jesuit High School team to their fourth straight A-14 district title, a championship further aided by his younger brother Lucas, who took third overall after a three-person playoff. Well done, Joseph and Lucas!

Congratulations to Sydney Brennan of The Bridges! In late August, Sydney packed her bags and headed north to Florida State, becoming the first child to grow up on Seabridge Way and head off to college. Everyone can’t wait to see you over the holidays!

Residents of the community offer their profound thanks to Brian Ross of West Park Village and Mike Clayton of The Greens, who recently concluded two-year terms on the Westchase Community Association Board of Directors. We thank them for their generous service and cooperative spirit.

I want to thank Brian Ross for his leadership in keeping our annual HOA fee from increasing. As we have seen in the past, fees never go down. -Donald Costello

Congrats to Troop 765 of Westchase, which kicked off their Silver Award service project by recently donating $250 of their cookie selling profits to help the Westchase Charitable Foundation during its recent fund-raiser for the Khan family. The troop is led by Shirley Hamilton and Kat Iacuone.

Congrats to Radcliffe’s Judy Heinemann on leading her Pinchaser’s summer season women’s bowling team to a first place finish. Her team, the Kool Katz, won going away this season, nine games ahead of the second place team. Individually she placed second for handicap game, third for scratch game, and third for handicap series. Way to go, Judy!

Congratulations to West Park’s Vanessa Montenegro for having her artwork selected to be part of the dolphins public art display at Pier 60 Park in Clearwater. The exhibit will be on display from Aug. 6 though Sept. 4.

Once again, dedicated Westchase residents illustrated civic mindedness as poll workers for the Aug. 14 primary.  Glencliff’s Kathy McGlone, Joann Gratt, and Tom Edwards; Harbor Links resident Darlene Slattery, Woodbay’s Charles Kling; Berkeley Square’s Kathryn DelGuidice; and WCA Directors Ken Blair and Keith Heinemann each served at Precinct 508 at its new library location. In addition, Glencliff’s Kathy Carlsen was promoted to clerk of a new precinct in Odessa.  Thanks to these folks for serving this important duty! Two more volunteers are needed; please contact the Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections to help.

Kudos to Pastor Melanie Fierbaugh and the Wellspring United Methodist Church congregation. They recently assisted a family that suffered a life-changing medical trauma. Within days the family received a portable wheelchair ramp and other needed supplies.  Meals were arranged and Pastor Fierbaugh personally reached out to the family. I am proud to be a member of this spirit-filled church! -Jean Keelan

Westchase Elementary's Second Grade Math Bowl team, consisting of Mrs. Corujo, Aidan Bei, Dakota Colangelo, Ethan Rosenblatt, Trent Hidenfelter and Gianni Spitale, recently won the area Math Bowl competition. With this win, they qualified to move on to the Hillsborough School District finals in Plant City, where they competed against 20 other schools on May 24. The Keystone Major BB Rangers recently finished runner-up in the District 6 Tournament of Champions. Keystone went 2-1 in pool play, losing only to Bayshore Little League, 6-0, in the tournament opener. The Rangers won their next four games to earn a berth in the championship game and a rematch with Bayshore Little League. In the championship, Keystone was defeated, 3-2, to finish runner-up. Great job, boys!

Thank you to the Westchase Elementary safety patrols, who kept our kids safe all year!

Thanks to all who made Mrs. Steinfeld's and Mrs. Rucker's fourth grade class annual camping trip to Disney’s Ft. Wilderness such a fun success. A great time was had by all, and we even managed to dodge all the heavy rains from Beryl!

Congratulations to Grace Wilcox for winning the Davidsen Middle School Sixth Grade Math Award and for getting straight A's for the year!  Great job, Grace!  We are so proud of you! -Love, Mom, Dad and Martha

In May the residents of The Vineyards celebrated Bette Vance's 80th birthday!  We had a big block party for her with most of the neighborhood attending.  Ms. Vance is one of the original Vineyards’ homeowners.  Congratulations, Bette!

Congratulations to Andy Gerovac of Harbor Links/Estates, who won the 2012 SERVE Department of Education Outstanding Adult Volunteer of the Year Award for Hillsborough County.  Andy has volunteered hundreds of hours over the years at Westchase, Davidsen and Alonso.  No job is too big or too small for “Mr. Andy.”  Way to go!

Westchase Shout Outs, June 2012

Congratulations to Dale Sells of Harbor Links, who made his first ever hole-in-one on April 24. He was golfing Heritage Harbor with buddies Dick Terry of Harbor Links and Dick Keltner, when, on the third hole, his ball found the cup from the tee. How exciting! We are so thrilled for you! -Nancy, Amanda, Dave, Natalie and Emery

Congratulations to this year’s Davidsen Girls Volleyball Team. They won their division of seven Hillsborough County schools and made it to the playoffs.

Happy Father's Day to the best daddy ever, Matt Peaire of Village Green. Your dedication to our family is truly remarkable and we love you x 1,000,000! -Love, Mackenzie and Gavin.

Well done, Westchase Elementary Third Grade Math Bowl Team! Team members Ethan Fabian, Michael Cui, Chloe Canant, Lila Patterson and Sam Splaine practiced diligently with their AGP teacher and coach, Mrs. Meredith Miller, and proudly represented their school at the May 8 Area Championships, where they qualified for the Hillsborough County School District Math Bowl Finals in Plant City by placing in the top three of the 13 schools that competed.

Congratulations to Westchase Elementary AGP teacher Meredith Miller for her third place finish in the 33rd Annual Governor’s Awards Program. The Florida Council on Economic Education (FCEE) recognizes Florida’s most outstanding teachers for their creativity in presenting lessons in economics, personal finance and entrepreneurship. Mrs. Miller’s students helped her create the winning Bank of Westchase project. Great job, Mrs. Miller, and all of your students!

Westchase Shout Outs, May 2012

All the Westchase dads who attended the Daddy Daughter Dance in March thank all the volunteers who made the wonderful event possible, particularly Pam Wilcox of The Bridges.

Meredith Miller, Westchase Teacher of the Gifted, President of the Gifted Advocacy Council of Hillsborough County (GACH), and resident of The Fords, would like to congratulate Stephanie Georgiades of The Greens, for her recent win in the election for Florida Association for the Gifted (FLAG) presidency.  Stephanie was a co-founder and past president of our local organization, GACH, and currently serves as our co-chair of advocacy and Web site/social media manager. She is tireless in her efforts on behalf of the gifted and FLAG will be lucky to have her!

Bridges resident Kristin Sarnese competed in the USAG XLOpen Gymnastics division this year. Kristin had a great year, finishing first overall at the Suncoast Sports Festival in Sarasota, the Magical Classic Invitational in Orlando and 2012 Gasparilla Classic at Tropicana Field. She had her highest score of a 38.025 at the 2012 Florida State Meet in Orlando, finishing first in Floor, Beam, Bars and first overall.  Way to go, Kristin!

Westchase Shout Outs, April 2012

Congratulations to Amy Jackson of The Greens and Dave and Tracy Urso of Castleford, who recently survived the Savage Race in Clermont, Florida. The race featured more than 21 twisted obstacles including fire jumping, and eight-foot wall climb, a 20-foot jump into a lake, 150-meter lake swim, mud crawling, and an ice bath – all scattered across a 4.7 mile rugged race course.

Amanda Wynne of The Vineyards ran her first half marathon at the Disney Princess Half Marathon on Sunday, Feb. 26, finishing the race in 2:42:59. Amanda had not visited a gym or jogged a single mile since high school when she began training. Amanda developed a passion for running once she realized it became a sanctuary from the stress of life. Her husband Dave and her daughters agreed she was their hero as she crossed the finish line!

Congratulations to Grace Pipp of The Greens for winning a first place award at the Westchase Elementary Science Fair. Her Project, Rollin on the River, explored how three types of community development (parks, residential, and downtown) affect water quality in the Hillsborough River. She received an Excellent Award at the 2012 Hillsborough Regional STEM Fair. Grace also won two special awards: The Lowry Park Zoo Environmental Award and the City of Tampa Drinking Water Award.

Zachary, Ethan, Nico, Anish, Alejandro, Patrick and Julian of Den 13 of Westchase Pack 46 recently held their March monthly meeting at Home Depot. The boys receive orange vests and built and designed a wood race car, ultimately receiving a pin and certificate of completion recognizing their accomplishments. The Scouts also took a tour of the power tool department. Loads of fun!

Westchase Shout Outs, March 2012

Our cousin Chris and his friend Brittany stopped by for a quick hello during their cross country bicycle trip that started more than 6,500 miles ago in Portland, Oregon. They are traveling all the way to New Jersey by way of Key West. While this alone is amazing enough, Chris also has a "robot leg" from an auto accident. Avery and Macklin DeAngelo (along with Mom and Dad) were so inspired that they tagged along for a 14-mile section of the trip from Westchase to South Tampa. Great job road warriors! -Kristen and Dave DeAngelo

Congratulations to the Third Grade Battle of the Books Champions from Westchase Elementary! Representing Ms. McElroy and Ms. Trupp’s classroom were Lila Patterson, Kate Kramer, Gracemary Allen, Nathan Lechner, Michael Qui, Emma Barrett and Hrishika Marikani. The team and their parents also thank Mignon and Don Patterson of Radcliffe for hosting the team training session and the victory pizza party afterward!

Thanks to Glencliff residents Bill Eddleman, Kathy McGlone, Kathy Carlsen, and Tom Edwards as well as Radcliffe’s Keith Heineman for their continued community service as poll workers for the Jan. 31 election day at Precinct 508.

Again, as it happens every two year cycle, we thank Clay Thomas, Mike Murphy and their staff at the Westchase Golf Club for their provision of the facility, along with their hospitality, during the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections operation of Precinct 508. Westchase residents in Precinct 508 enjoy a comfortable polling place with plenty of parking. We also thank Rosie and Adrian on the grill staff for all their support.

On Jan. 15 Abbotford’s Olivia Caputo, the reigning Miss Junior Teen United States, was a guest-of-honor at the Shriner's Hospital in Tampa at the Meet and Greet Event in advance of the Shriner's East/West football game. She visited with current and former patients and their families, and met the players and coaches during their visit to the hospital.

Congratulations to Radcliffe’s Eileen Randle! Eileen recently completed her Jazzercise instructor certification training and is now teaching a 5:45 a.m. class at Westchase Jazzercise on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Way to go, Eileen! We are very proud of you!

Kudos to Girl Scout Troop 1231, which participated in their second annual Teddy Bear Roundup. The girls donated new bears that will be given to sick children or adults. Very small bears are sent overseas for our soldiers to give to Afghan children. Compared to last year, the growth that the girls showed in being able to say goodbye to these special bears was inspiring. The Scouts thank Mr. Marty Mantei from the Tampa Bay Rough Riders for speaking to them about the Teddy Bear Roundup!

Great job and special thanks to Courtney, Steve, Jillian and Demonic Netta; Chris Mason; Grace and Martha Wilcox; April Lavenant; and Brian, Ronnie, Bri and Danny Zeigler for cleaning and painting all the mailboxes on Bayboro Bridge Drive. The street looks great! We thank you for making the neighborhood terrific! -Pam Wilcox

A big “thank you” to former CDD Supervisors Bob Argus, Susan Edgerley, Keith Heinemann, Joseph Lechman and Lewis Patterson, who voluntarily stepped down from their paid positions on the two Westchase districts to make possible a merger that will save Westchasers money and streamline our local government. It is rare to see such selflessness in elected leaders today!

The Alonso High School TV Production Students would like to thank World of Westchase for an awesome, state of the art studio. Our new morning show is a class act thanks to your graciousness and support. We couldn't have done it without you! -Assistant Principal Larissa McCoy

Kudos to Preppy Pets Suites and its owners, Cherie and Craig. In the past year, they agreed to care for four pets belonging to a relative of ours who sought much needed in-patient therapy. They not only provided excellent care for the pets, they provided continuous support for our family member, ever encouraging her to stick with the plan. Recently our family member completed one year of treatment, obtained independent residence and is now with her beloved pets and enjoying a life about which her pets and she could have only previously dreamed.  We will be forever grateful to Cherie and Craig for taking an active role in providing a new start to both our family member and her four furr-children. -Judy Servidio

Shout Outs

A big shout out to Caroline Butt for donating 10 inches of hair to Locks of Love.  It has been a long, two-year process that began when a dear family friend was diagnosed with breast cancer.  We are so proud of Caroline for her commitment to this great cause.  -Love, Mom, Dad and Andrew

Congratulations to Greens resident and upcoming Robinson IB freshman Julie Williams for singing the national anthem at the July 18 Rays versus Yankees game.  The evening marked the annual "Lou Gehrig Nights" with the Tampa Bay Rays.  Julie was able to honor the memory of her uncle Jim Davis, who passed away from this disease in 2000.  More than 25 friends and neighbors came out to support Julie and the ALS Association.  Congratulations, Julie!

Congratulations to Lucas and Joseph Trim for placing in the North Sun Coast Junior Golf Association Tournament of Champions!  The tournament was held at World Woods Golf Course in Brooksville on Aug. 4-5.  Lucas placed third in the 16-18 advanced boys, shooting a two-day total of 146, which was three over par.  Joseph placed first in the 13-15 advanced boys age group with 140, three under par.

Want to offer a shout out to China on Race Track Road.  Recently, just as I was walking out their door with my order, I realized I had forgotten to order one entree.  They whipped it up pronto and then wouldn't even let me pay for it! That's what I call customer focused. -Chris Fischer
