TriGals Invite You to Swim in the New Year

January is the month for New Year’s resolutions and mild Florida weather.

Put these two together and you have the perfect conditions for the annual Censored Tri Distance Challenge, sponsored by the Tampa Bay TriGals.

The goal of the Tri Distance Challenge is to swim, bike and run as many miles as possible from Jan. 1-31.  Participants will get fit and the winners of the event get to donate the money raised through the event’s registration fees and sponsors to the charities of their choice. The event ends with an awesome award party at the Westchase Swim and Tennis Center, where we distribute tech T-shirts to participants, announce the winners and their charities, and enjoy great food and an incredible raffle.

To help kick off the season, the TriGals will host a “Swim in the New Year” at the Westchase Swim and Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 8, from 10 a.m.-noon.  This is an informal get-together where Tri Distance Challenge participants set their own personal New Year's goal to swim for the morning:  2,012 yards (approximately 40 laps) or any increment thereof.  Drop by any time between 10 a.m. and noon you’ll be sure to see the TriGals there logging some yards.

We can’t guarantee it, but the weather should be good.  The pool is heated to a comfortable 82 degrees and the TriGals will be there with coffee, juice, bagels and fruit.

If you want to begin logging your miles early in the new year, visit www.thetrigals.com to download the application or mail in the one included in last month’s WOW inserts.  If you have already registered, we thank you. See you at the pool in the new year and be sure to look for other training activities hosted by the Tampa Bay TriGals!

Are You Registered for January’s Tri Distance Challenge?

In January the TriGals are kicking off their annual event and want you to join the fun.

Interested residents can register for the Censored Tri Distance Challenge with the form in this month’s WOW inserts. This is an awesome event for everyone! Its goal is for participants to swim, bike and run miles during the month of January. Participants compete in five categories: individual male; individual female; relay team; partner team; and spirit team. The winners of these five categories get to donate money raised through the event’s registration fees and sponsors to the charities of their choice.

The Tri Distance Challenge continues to grow and would love for you to participate. Get a neighborhood or work group together and sign up starting Dec. 1! It’s a great way to start those New Year’s resolutions, promote a lot of friendly competition and benefit some amazing charities! Did you know that cycle classes and treadmills count and the Westchase pool is heated to a toasty 82 degrees year round? Hit www.thetrigals.com for more information or e-mail us at info@thetrigals.com.

The TriGals have been very busy over the last few months. We have had a number of members participate in several local and national triathlons. Congratulations to Westchase’s Kristina Brendzel and Kristin Freeman for placing first and second overall in the Tarpon Springs Triathlon in October. We also had some of our stellar women travel to Iowa, Georgia and Vermont for tri races!

The TriGals also kicked off the inaugural “Tri a 5K with the TriGals” event in September. This event was a fantastic opportunity for participants to either try a 5K for the first time or improve their times with an eight-week training program for The Great West Chase 5K. Participants in the program, run by Certified USAT Coach and TriGal President Laura Glover, received training plans and runs were held weekly in Westchase to prepare everyone for the race. We had a great turnout and participants made some great training friends along the way. Be sure to look for this opportunity again next September!
