The Amazing Race Returns to Westchase Feb. 26

It’s back! If you missed one of Westchase’s most entertaining events the past two years, be sure to register today! The Amazing Race for Life of Westchase will return to the Westchase Recreation Center on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. Come join the fun and hilarity! Your team of family and friends will compete with other Westchase teams to solve clues, visit nearby establishments and tackle challenges – all in an attempt to be named winner of the 2012 Amazing Race for Life. The event was created by Stamford’s Brett Steinfeld, 13, as part of his Bar Mitzvah project in 2009. Steinfeld created the race to raise money for the American Cancer Society for Relay for Life in memory of his grandfathers, who both died from cancer. Last year the event raised $4,300.

“I enjoy planning the event because it is a ton of fun to create the challenges that the participants have to complete on the race,” observed Steinfeld. “We love watching the show Amazing Race and getting ideas for our race. We are very lucky to live in a community like Westchase where the local businesses are willing to help and have fun with the race too.”

Last year’s race saw the Foster family of The Greens win the car division and Scott Brennan of The Bridges and his friends place first in the bike division.

“The Amazing Race is a wonderful family-fun adventure that everyone of all ages should compete in.  It benefits a great cause,” remarked Sandi Foster. “During this past year I now have lost my father to this awful disease and hope we can find a cure.  My family is looking forward to see what new challenges await in this year’s race.”

The event is a significant undertaking, supported last year by over 50 volunteers. These individuals helped the event run smoothly as its 142 participants tackled challenges like completing a Mini Boot Camp on the campus of Davidsen Middle School and consuming  Maloney’s Irish Local Pub’s famous Shepherd’s Pie without utensils. This year’s event will also feature challenges that require participants to find their way to 12 secret locations based upon clues developed with the help of puzzle master Tom Brennan of The Bridges.

Teams will consist of four to six individuals. Teams can participate in either a car division or a bike division. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in each division. Winners receive a trophy, gifts from the event’s sponsors and bragging rights that will win the respect and adoration of all.

In addition to participating teams, the Steinfelds are again looking for volunteers to lend a hand and sponsorships to help defray race costs. Those interested in volunteering or sponsoring the race can contact them at brettsteinfeld@yahoo.com.

Interested participants can register for the race by contacting Brett Steinfeld at brettsteinfeld@yahoo.com. The registration fee is $100 per team, with all money raised going to the American Cancer Society.

The deadline for registration is Sunday, Feb. 19. Register early, however, as the event will be capped at 30 teams and is expected to fill up quickly.

Enjoy spring, have a blast and help a worthy cause! Join the Amazing Race for Life of Westchase!
