Westchase SliceGirls Take Second at State Tennis Championship

In August a Westchase USTA women’s tennis team made the community proud at the Florida Championship tournament.

The Westchase 2.5 Women’s Tennis team competed in the Florida Championship tournament at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Florida over the weekend of Aug 18-20.

The “SliceGirls" battled it out with the best teams in the state and ended up with a 4-1 record, tying for first place in team wins. The overall winner was then decided by individual wins and the SliceGirls clinched second place “finalists” with 10 wins. The competition was hotter than the blazing hot court temperatures. Five of the individual matches were decided by tiebreakers.

The team won the opportunity to compete at the state level by going undefeated in the local Hillsborough league in back-to-back seasons. Many months of practice and preparation paid off for this group of ladies. After defeating the team that would end up in first place, teammate Christine Lahiff said, “It was exhilarating!”

These same opponents became fast friends in the festive and supportive environment, where the love for the game was clearly evident.

This was truly an unforgettable weekend and the SliceGirls can’t wait for the chance to return and compete again next year.

Congratulations to these wonderful SliceGirl teammates and friends: Michalene “Mike” Sennet, Melissa Bode, Christine Lahiff, Moira Konyk, Lora Griffith, Catherine Pacifici, Nisreen Shamseddine, Kristen DeAngelo and Neelam Yi.
