Dolphins Celebrate Sweet September Finishes

By Graig Fischer, Westchase Aquatics Director

Swim season for the summer just finished about five weeks ago. Here we are in October, and the Westchase Dolphins already have swum in two competitions this past month. We truly do swim year-round here in Florida. With that in mind, all residents should think about coming out to the pool for the best workout that your body can experience. Arguably, swimming is the best possible physical activity, so we hope to see you at the pool soon.

With our first short-course (25-yards) meet of the season under their belts, the Dolphins team finished in ninth place out of 14 teams at the 10th Annual Sweet September Meet in Dunedin on Sept. 8 – 10. The Dolphins swam very well for their first meet of the season. For some Dolphins, this meet was their very first time swimming some of the more challenging, longer-distance events. The Dolphins who were involved in newer events included Carlye Owen, Kaya Gingras and Jack Marlowe. They swam the 200-yard Butterfly for the first time ever and came away with the knowledge that this event was a lot easier than expected. Of note is the fact that all three of them thought that Coach Fish was just picking on them; hopefully they’ll now remember that Coach will never put them in an event unless he feels that they might just surprise themselves!

Jacqui Voute also swam the 200 Breaststroke for the first time and, like the butterfliers, she knows that this just might be a pretty good race for her as well!

Other top ten swimmers at the meet include Kaya Gingras, who placed fourth in the 11-and-12-Girls 200 Fly and tenth in the 200 Back; Brittany Marlin, who placed fifth in the Open-Girls 50 Free, sixth in the 100 Back and seventh in the 100 Free; and Carlye Owens, who took third in the 11-and-12-Girls 200 Fly, sixth in the 100 Back and ninth in both the 100 and 200 Free.

Other top ten finishes were made by Jacqui Voute (11 and 12 Girls) in the 200 Breast; Nathaniel Gunby (Open Boys), who finished second in both the 50 Free and 100 Fly, third in both the 100 Breast and 200 Free and sixth in the 500 Free; Jack Marlowe (11 and 12 Boys), who placed second in the 500 Free, 200 IM, 100 Breast, 100 Fly, 200 Breast and the 200 Fly and fourth in the 50 Free, 200 Back and the 100 Back.

Rounding out the top ten were Christopher Russell (6 and Under Boys), who placed fifth in the 25 Fly, seventh in the 25 Free and tenth in the 25 Back; and Austin Sellers (9 and 10 Boys), who placed third in the 200 IM, 100 and 50 Breast, sixth in the 200 Free, ninth in the 100 IM and

tenth in the 50 Free. Other Dolphins that competed and swam some fast swims include Dani Matthews (9 and 10 Girls), Loren Tran (9 and 10 Girls), Sydney Tran (8 and Under Girls), Jenna Piontek (9 and 10 Girls), Alex Malooley (9 and 10 Boys) and Joey Russell (9 and 10 Boys).

Jack Marlowe finished in third place overall in the 11 and 12 Boys and brought home some additional hardware – way to go, Jack! Stay tuned for results from the Winter Haven meet from the weekend of Sept. 22-24.
