Ben Iorio is transforming potential into performance.
At just 16 years old, Westchase resident Ben Iorio is carving out a name for himself on the mats at SLAM Tampa, proving that dedication, discipline, and the right mindset can transform potential into performance. A junior, born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Ben’s journey in wrestling began early, stepping onto the mat for the first time at just six years old. But like many athletes, it wasn’t until his freshman year of high school that “it just clicked”. What was once just another sport became a serious pursuit, and from that moment on, Ben committed himself fully to the intense grind that wrestling demands.
What drew Ben to wrestling in the first place was its individuality. Unlike team sports where the outcome can hinge on others, wrestling places the responsibility squarely
on the athlete. For Ben, that’s exactly what made it appealing. Every win was earned, every loss was owned, and every improvement was the direct result of his effort. That accountability has shaped not just his approach to the sport, but his mindset in everyday life. Although wrestling has become his primary focus, Ben is no stranger to balancing multiple athletic commitments. A multi-sport athlete, he has been playing lacrosse since the age of eight and added cross country when he entered high school. Each sport contributes to his overall athleticism, but it’s wrestling that pushes him to his limits both mentally and physically. Ask Ben what wrestling has given him, and his answer goes far beyond wins and losses. He speaks about the “family” that forms within the wrestling room, and the bonds between teammates and coaches that are built through shared struggle and perseverance. It’s a connection unlike any other sport, forged in long practices, tough matches, and the constant pursuit of improvement. Alongside that camaraderie comes a relentless work ethic. Ben believes that if someone can excel in wrestling, they can succeed in anything, simply because of the discipline the sport requires.
His growth on the mat is evident in his accomplishments. With 75 career wins already under his belt, Ben continues to build an impressive resume. During his sophomore year, he placed second at Districts and third in Hillsborough County, showcasing his ability to compete at a high level. As a junior, he added another milestone by placing third at the St. John Neumann 1A Kickoff tournament. These achievements reflect not only his skill, but his consistency and determination to improve each season.Still, for Ben, one of the most meaningful moments in his wrestling career isn’t tied to a specific match or victory. Instead, it’s the realization that his hard work is paying off and he has the ability to be “truly competitive”. It was a turning point that continues to fuel his drive. The 2024–25 season brought both progress and perspective. While Ben describes the season as successful overall, it ended earlier than he had hoped at Regionals. Rather than discouraging him, the experience gave him clarity. “The season opened my eyes to where I should be and that there are levels to wrestling,” he said. That realization has only strengthened his focus as he prepares for the next step in his journey.
Behind every athlete is a support system, and for Ben, that starts with his family. He credits all of his coaches for helping shape him into the wrestler he is today, but it’s his father who has had the most profound impact. Guiding him through the mental side of the sport, his dad has been a constant presence and role model. Ben’s motivation is deeply rooted in that relationship. He strives to not only meet expectations, but to exceed them. As his mother put it, “Ben has grown strong on the mat. But more importantly he grew more strategic, more steady, and more resilient with every win and every loss.” His 2025-26 season saw him win a District title, and took him into the blood round at Regionals. His Coach, Grayson Fisher, speaks highly of Ben, stating “His belief in himself is spectacular, and it becomes contagious to those around him. He works hard, has fun, and loves to compete. I have no doubt in my mind Ben will be high on the podium next year, and if the cards fall right, he might find himself competing for a state title.” For that, Ben was awarded the prestigious Championship Mindset Award this year from his coaches.
Off the mat, Ben brings the same energy and positivity to his everyday life. Known for his sense of humor, he enjoys keeping his teammates relaxed, especially younger wrestlers who may feel the pressure before matches. It’s the way he contributes to his team, showing leadership through encouragement. Looking ahead, Ben has his sights set high. With aspirations of wrestling at the collegiate level, he remains open to where the journey may take him. His goals are ambitious, striving to become a State Champion and prove to himself that he belongs among the top three wrestlers in the state.
In a sport defined by grit and resilience, Ben Iorio is steadily building both. And as he continues to grow, one thing is certain. His story is just getting started.
